    I mentioned the odd inversion to you. Where you are, the season is winding up, days rapidly growing shorter, and what’s left of the growing season (outside of coldframes and greenhouses) can be counted in weeks. Now is the busy time of harvest and storage, canning and freezing and fermentation.

    Down here, the coming month portends the end of blistering heat, of needing to water plants twice a day just to keep them alive. But just as it becomes cool enough for most plants to survive, the day is becoming shorter, and I can’t help but feel that’s a conflicting signal to most annuals–we’re not supposed to grow because the day is getting shorter. Still, it’s warm enough and now it’s my turn to try to grow something that can be eaten, even if only lettuce.
